Overview
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most famous and rewarding wildlife reserve. Bordering the sparkling Indian Ocean on the southeastern coast, it offers a stunning mosaic of dense jungles, open grasslands, and beautiful saltwater lagoons. Most famously, Yala boasts one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, making it a premier global destination for big cat photography. Alongside these elusive predators, thrilling open-jeep safaris will bring you face-to-face with majestic Asian elephants, shaggy sloth bears, massive crocodiles, and vibrant peacocks.
February to July. During the dry season (June to July), water levels are lower, drawing leopards, elephants, and other animals out into the open to drink. (Park often closes in September for maintenance).
