Overview
Sigiriya, famously known as the "Lion Rock," is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably Sri Lanka's most dramatic historical landmark. Rising abruptly almost 200 meters from the central plains, this massive column of rock served as the short-lived, brilliant capital of King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Ascending its heights reveals a fascinating story of ancient engineering, showcasing remarkably preserved water gardens, the mirrored wall, ancient frescoes of celestial maidens, and the colossal carved Lion Paws guarding the final ascent to the summit palace ruins.
January to April. We recommend climbing early in the morning (around 7 AM) to avoid the mid-day tropical heat and the larger tourist crowds.
